Rockford Alimony Attorney
Alimony can help a spouse become self-sufficient or it can provide long-term support. There are three types of alimony:
- Permanent maintenance — This is an ongoing financial obligation until the death of the former spouse.
- Maintenance in gross — Unlike an ongoing obligation, maintenance in gross is a fixed sum paid in a lump sum or in installments.
- Rehabilitative maintenance — This is a form of maintenance that is designed to help a former spouse secure an education or skills necessary to begin earning sufficient income to support himself or herself.
Recent Changes To Alimony Law
In 2014, laws were put into place that drastically changed the determination of alimony in Illinois. One of the main changes is that now, for couples earning less than $250,000 combined, although this amount will increase to $500,000 as of July 1, 2018, there is a formula that may be used to determine alimony. The addition of this formula is just one of the changes. We can help you understand how these changes impact your individual situation.
